The Wilson cheekpiece has two loose rings. The inside pair go around the mouthpiece, the bridle cheekpieces attached to these. The outside pair go through the mouthpiece as a normal loose ring, the reins are attached to this pair.
A Wilson bit is measure between the inside pair of rings.

Functionality
The Wilson increases cheek pressure and therefore improves turning. The mouthpiece will be slightly more supported in the mouth, decreasing mouth pressure to some degree and transferring the pressure to the cheeks.
