Interesting Fact:
Many, many years ago the Fox Hunters used a Lip Strap with their Pelham. The lip strap connects to the lip rings on a Pelham or Weymouth shank and through the extra link of the curb chain. This thin, rolled leather strap is fitted to help the curb chain lie flat against the horse’s jaw. The lip strap was first used to keep the curb chain in place. Traditionally the curb hooks were not closed, this could allow the chain to bounce out of the hooks when out hunting. The lip strap ensured that the chain was not lost should it indeed bounce out of the hooks. Many regions in the world still practice the habit of using lip straps.
