Watch LessonSnaffle Lock Up Polito
The Lock Up snaffle removes the nut cracker action of the conventional snaffle, meaning it will bear less pressure on the horse’s bars. The Lock Up is therefore a softer option, than a conventional snaffle, although it still applies tongue and bar pressure when the reins are taken up.
The Polito mouthpieces are flattened. This allows a larger surface area across the bars and tongue when the bit is not in use, however, when contact is taken up, the mouthpiece rotates onto the narrower surface area, thus increasing the pressure.
Functionality
The Snaffle Lock Up Polito creates a pressure point on the tongue due to the link concentrating pressure on a small surface area, this pressure point is less sharp than a general snaffle as we have designed our snaffle with an offset link, creating a less obvious pressure point. This pressure point on the tongue is softened due to the “Lock” effect. The Lock in the centre link allows the mouthpiece to retain the correct shape in the horses mouth. Pressure descends onto the bars and due to the mouthpiece being a semi-broken mouthpiece, it will hinder creating a squeeze on the bars – the extra piece of metal that has been added prevents the mouthpiece from folding backwards therefore creating little, to no squeeze on the bars. The flattened sides of the Snaffle Lock Up Polito will be comfortable for the horse to hold in their mouth as the larger surface area creates less pressure, however, when contact is taken up, the mouthpiece will rotate onto the thinner area, increasing the pressure created. The Snaffle Lock Up Polito is available in Sweet Iron. The Sweet Iron material was chosen as a metal option as it oxidizes. Oxidization encourages salivation and acceptance of the mouthpiece. The semi-broken, Snaffle Lock Up Polito, has limited movement.
