The Lock Up snaffle removes the nut cracker action of the conventional snaffle, meaning it will bear less pressure on the horse’s bars. The Lock Up is therefore a softer option, than a conventional snaffle, although it still applies tongue and bar pressure when the reins are taken up.
The Petros will not create much additional pressure on the bars, however it’s rotation will prevent a horse from taking hold of the bit.
Functionality
The Snaffle creates a pressure point on the tongue due to the link concentrating pressure on a small surface area, this pressure point is less sharp than a general snaffle as we have designed our snaffle with an offset link, creating a less obvious pressure point. This pressure point on the tongue is softened due to the “Lock” effect. The Lock in the centre link allows the mouthpiece to retain the correct shape in the horses mouth. Pressure descends onto the bars and due to the mouthpiece being a semi-broken mouthpiece, it will hinder creating a squeeze on the bars – the extra piece of metal that has been added prevents the mouthpiece from folding backwards therefore creating little, to no squeeze on the bars. The square twist is a stronger specialization than the round twist as the spines are a smaller, sharper surface area. This specialization rotates, preventing the horse taking hold of the bit. Often good for a horse that leans or tries to take hold of the bit. The Snaffle Lock up is available in Sweet Iron. The Sweet Iron material was chosen as a metal option as it oxidizes. Oxidization encourages salivation and acceptance of the mouthpiece. The semi-broken, Snaffle Lock Up, has limited movement.
