Watch LessonMullen Corkscrew
The Mullen is a strong bit which creates direct pressure on the tongue. Used for a strong older horse and will also bring the head down.
The Corkscrew mouthpiece is grooved to offer extra control over strong horses. The groove in the mouthpiece causes edges that result in pressure points in the horse’s mouth. The edges amplify pressure on the mouth, especially the bars and tongue, and also act on the lips. This offers the rider more control than a smooth mouthpiece, and can help to prevent the horse from leaning.
Functionality
The Mullen Corkscrew applies pressure across the tongue and bars. Pressure applied to the tongue is direct and constant. The Mullen Corkscrew has been shaped to fit the curve of the horses mouth, this curve also allows pressure to be spread over a large surface area. The corkscrew is the strongest specialization . This specialization does apply a great amount of pressure on the tongue and bars as each high point creates an individual pressure point where it lands. Due to the mouthpiece being a solid, there will be no squeeze on the bars. The Mullen is available in Sweet Iron. The Sweet Iron material was chosen as a metal option as it oxidizes. Oxidization encourages salivation and acceptance of the mouthpiece. The Mullen Square Twist is not flexible.
