Watch LessonBarrel 20
The Barrel joint limits the nut cracker action, which spreads the pressure over a larger area of the tongue and lessens the pressure on the bars. The Barrel allows for independent action on each rein.
Bomber recommends this to eliminate the nutcracker action of a single joint if the horse pokes or flicks its nose in the air showing signs of objecting to the pinching of the tongue and bar. The independent action on each rein allows the rider to lift one shoulder.
Functionality
The Barrel 20 creates pressure on the tongue due to the center component concentrating pressure on a small surface area. The center component is a smooth, rotating barrel that creates an even pressure on the tongue. Pressure descends onto the bars and due to the mouthpiece being a semi-broken mouthpiece, it will hinder creating a squeeze on the bars – the barrel hinders the mouthpiece to fold backwards therefore creating little, to no squeeze on the bars. The Barrel also allows for independent lateral aids. The Sweet Iron material was chosen as a metal option as it oxidizes. Oxidization encourages salivation and acceptance of the mouthpiece. The semi-broken, Barrel 20, has limited movement.
